Financial technology firm Mercury has officially launched Mercury Spend, an expanded spend management ecosystem designed to help growing enterprises issue employee and autonomous AI agent cards while maintaining real-time financial oversight.
As modern startups scale rapidly with leaner operational teams, conventional expense management tools often fail to provide programmatic control. Built natively into Mercury’s core banking dashboard, Mercury Spend combines self-enforcing policy controls, automated accounting workflows, and specialized card infrastructure tailored specifically for autonomous AI agents eliminating the need for separate finance tools and complex third-party software integrations.
Redefining Corporate Expense Management for the AI Era
Traditional spend management platforms frequently require a dedicated finance team to configure, integrate, and manage separate tools, creating fragmented operational data. By unifying expense controls directly within the underlying banking environment, Mercury Spend provides business leaders with complete visibility over corporate cash positions and runway without software fragmentation.
The platform introduces several key operational capabilities:
-
Intelligent Budgeting and Enforcement: Founders can establish dedicated budgets for specific operational needs such as travel, software, or procurement within minutes without a finance team. Limits enforce automatically, and transactions exceeding preset thresholds are declined at the point of sale. Merchants can also be restricted by name or Merchant Category Code (MCC).
-
AI Agent Cards: As businesses delegate more operational work to AI agents, teams can issue cards that give agents the ability to complete purchases end-to-end within policies set by a human. Created exclusively by human administrators, these agent cards are trackable, auditable, and cancellable, operating within defined limits that agents cannot bypass or alter.

-
Automated Accounting Workflows: Transactions route automatically to designated budget categories, with customizable rules to control how spending feeds into accounting systems. Receipts are collected through a native Gmail integration that scans connected inboxes to match receipts to transactions, or via receipt texting that allows employees to submit photos of receipts by replying to an SMS prompt.
-
Self-Enforcing Policy Guardrails: Cards automatically freeze when a required receipt, memo, or category is missing, remaining locked until the employee completes the outstanding task.
-
Holistic Finance Visibility: Spend connects directly to a company’s cash position and runway, making team spending visible alongside the complete financial picture from day one without additional software setup.
-
Natural Language Command Integration: Every function within Mercury Spend is accessible through “Command,” Mercury’s conversational AI layer. Users can manage spending rules, check cash positions, set automated rules, and send invoices via natural language prompts within a single conversation.
“Companies can be smaller and faster than they were two years ago, and they’re a mix of people and agents doing real work,” said Immad Akhund, CEO and co-founder of Mercury. “Founders need a scalable and programmatic way to manage spending, understand where money is going, and automate the busywork of receipts and accounting. With Mercury Spend, founders can give their teams and agents a real spending infrastructure, not just a card.”
Tactical Innovation Meets Modern Design
To mark the platform’s launch, Mercury has also released a limited-edition physical IO card created in collaboration with sculptor, ceramicist, and designer Simone Bodmer-Turner. Derived from an original sculpture created for Mercury, the physical card features premium layered printing that brings a tactile, dimensional aesthetic to corporate payment hardware.
By embedding AI agent governance, real-time liquidity tracking, and automated bookkeeping into a single environment, Mercury Spend equips modern technology companies with the financial controls needed to manage autonomous workflows and human teams alike.
