UniCredit, Accenture and IBM Launch Strategic Alliance to Modernize Banking Technology

Share

Pan-European banking leader UniCredit has announced a multi-year strategic agreement with Accenture  and IBM to engineer a next-generation technology foundation across its thirteen European markets. The broad collaboration is designed to modernize UniCredit’s digital architecture, accelerate the scaling of enterprise artificial intelligence, and create a resilient, agile operating model for financial technology in Europe.

Under the multi-year program, the three organizations will co-design a modernized IT operating structure. This approach grants UniCredit direct oversight over its long-term technology roadmaps while marrying the high availability of mission-critical banking systems with the speed and adaptability of modern cloud platforms.

Restructuring Tech Infrastructure and Ecosystem Investments

As part of the structural agreement, Accenture will acquire IBM’s majority stake in the joint venture entity currently responsible for overseeing a substantial share of UniCredit’s core technology infrastructure. Concurrently, IBM will deliver modernized mainframe technology, enterprise software, and advisory consulting services—including IBM Z hardware platforms-to reinforce UniCredit’s underlying core processing environment.

The joint initiative serves as a core pillar of UniCredit’s overall corporate growth strategy. By optimizing legacy infrastructure and expanding hybrid cloud capabilities, the Group aims to set an industry benchmark for European banking systems while accelerating responsible AI adoption across its regional operations.

“This partnership demonstrates how technology can become a strategic growth engine,” said Mauro Macchi, Chief Executive Officer of Accenture EMEA. “By bringing together a pan-European footprint, strong execution capabilities and mission-critical technology, we are creating a reinvention model built to scale across markets. Together with UniCredit, we aim to accelerate the adoption of cloud, data and artificial intelligence to unlock new sources of value, create greater value for customers, people and communities.”

“Our enhanced collaboration with UniCredit, including both our technology and consulting capabilities, reflects a shared commitment to innovation and transformation,” said Ana Paula Assis, Senior Vice President and Chair IBM EMEA & APAC. “By combining modern infrastructure with UniCredit’s hybrid cloud architecture, we are helping to establish a technology foundation that can support UniCredit’s long-term growth while delivering better experiences for its customers.”

Scaling Digital Capabilities Across European Banking Markets

By establishing a flexible, hybrid IT framework, UniCredit seeks to improve operational performance, reduce time-to-market for digital products, and deliver seamless banking experiences to millions of retail and commercial clients across Europe. The streamlined operating structure will also give UniCredit greater control over software evolution and data orchestration.

Closing of the joint venture transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, regulatory approvals, and standard worker information and consultation procedures across relevant jurisdictions.
