FTA Survey: Americans View Buy Now, Pay Later as a Responsible Alternative to Credit Cards

A national survey co-developed by the Financial Technology Association (FTA) and HarrisX shows that most Americans consider Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) “Pay in 4” plans a legitimate financial tool which they also see as a better option compared to charging everything via credit cards that incur large interest rates Mostly during times when expenses become expensive and inflation levels rise. The survey found that 91% of “Pay in 4” users and 77% of U.S. households in general think that such splitpayment methods are beneficial for consumer finances. And, 87% of the users directly said that paying via bnpl helped them avoid going into debts which come with very high-interest rates. Emphasizing the strong consumer sentiment driving this shift . Americans very strongly see BNPL ‘Pay in 4’ as a low-cost, flexible tool to manage their finances. People who’ve used BNPL find it gives them flexibility, makes for a better alternative to other payment options, and ultimately supports their financial well-being. We asked, and Americans want this resource protected and preserved.

Americans want financial options and flexible payment opportunities as they navigate inflation and affordability concerns. Our research shows U.S. adults and voters overwhelmingly view Buy Now Pay Later ‘Pay in 4’ plans as a valuable financial tool that gives them greater flexibility and control over their finances while reducing their reliance on high-interest credit cards. Furthermore, 88% of users and 75% of the general public advocate for policymakers to protect BNPL access, aligning with industry efforts to maintain balanced regulations that uphold consumer protections without curtailing low-cost payment flexibility.
