Intercontinental Exchange Expands Advanced IRM 2 Portfolio Margining Model to Global Interest Rate and Fixed Income Markets

Share

Global market infrastructure and financial data provider Intercontinental Exchange, Inc.  has expanded its advanced Value-at-Risk (VaR) portfolio margining methodology, ICE Risk Model 2 (IRM 2), to its benchmark interest rate and fixed income derivatives suite.

The rollout incorporates key U.K. and European interest rate futures and options contracts including Euribor, €STR, SONIA, SARON, and Gilts, alongside major related spread instruments into the IRM 2 ecosystem. This expansion adds to more than 1,300 derivatives contracts already cleared under the IRM 2 model across ICE’s global energy and financial commodities infrastructure.

Modernizing Risk Analytics Amid Shifting Global Interest Rate Dynamics

As global monetary policy paths diverge across central banks, institutional market participants require more granular, responsive risk models to navigate complex multi-currency rate portfolios. Traditional margining models often struggle to account for cross-currency correlations and offsetting exposures, tying up liquidity unnecessarily during volatile market regimes.

IRM 2 addresses these capital efficiency hurdles by leveraging a Filtered Historical Simulation VaR approach. The model analyzes portfolios holistically, measuring risk across multiple currencies, maturities, and benchmark instruments while granting margin offsets where underlying risks counteract one another.

Key technical capabilities and operational benefits delivered through the IRM 2 expansion include:

  • Filtered Historical Simulation VaR Engine: Measures multi-currency interest rate risks accurately by accounting for correlation dynamics across different yield curves and asset tenors.
  • Anti-Procyclical Guardrails: Features built-in anti-procyclical mechanisms designed to prevent sudden “big step” margin hikes during market stress events, ensuring predictable collateral demands.
  • Optimized Portfolio Offsets: Evaluates offsetting positions across benchmark contracts such as Euribor, €STR, SONIA, SARON, and Gilts reducing capital drag for institutional clearing members.
  • Expanded Asset Coverage: Broadens ICE’s multi-currency rate suite, which added Short-Term Interest Rate (STIR) futures across Japanese, Swedish, Norwegian, South African, and Australian markets earlier this year, with plans to migrate these contracts to IRM 2 in due course.

Strong Trading Momentum Across Fixed Income Derivatives

The transition to IRM 2 occurs amid surging trading volume across ICE’s fixed income platform. Open interest across ICE’s interest rate and fixed income complex has increased by 23% year-over-year, while average daily volume (ADV) has expanded by 47% year-to-date.

“Bringing interest rates onto IRM 2 is the next major step in rolling out our new risk model,” said Hester Serafini, President of ICE Clear Europe. “Margin should reflect the risk of positions a member holds, so IRM 2 looks at the whole portfolio and measures risk with greater precision, giving credit where exposures offset one another. Backed by our continued investment in clearing and risk technology, IRM 2 adapts as markets move, and we thank our customers for their continued trust and collaboration.”

“The move to IRM 2 comes during a record year for ICE’s interest rate products,” said Caterina Caramaschi, VP of Financial Derivatives at ICE. “Diverging central bank policy paths are driving demand for more sophisticated risk tools. Rates exposures across currencies and tenors move in relation to one another, and clients need a margin model that reflects those relationships. With IRM 2, clients can manage multi-currency interest rate risk on ICE with greater capital efficiency.”
